Future fusion plasmas will be challenging to diagnose due to the high thermal and neutronic load on everything installed inside the device. Microwave diagnostics will be one of the few diagnostics techniques available. A recently published review paper by IGVP scientist Dr. Alf Köhn-Seemann gives an overview on microwave diagnostics, in particular electron cyclotron emission and reflectometry, with an emphasis on their imaging installations, providing 2D images with high temporal and spatial resolution in a poloidal cross section of electron density and temperature. The paper has been recognized as an Editor’s Pick and is available for free in Physics of Plasmas.
