Chemical-Physical Interfaces

Functional polymer materials, functional layers and surfaces

Chemical-medical interfaces

In our application-oriented, interdisciplinary basic research, we develop new functional polymer materials from bio-based, synthetic and bioinspired polymers, for example, to formulate active ingredients and new biomaterials for contacting biological systems. Controlled crosslinking of synthetic or natural molecular building blocks provides the hydrogels with tunable properties and biological properties associated with (bio)inks for additive manufacturing processes that are required for the construction of artificial articular cartilage or bone.

Main fields of research

Material development

  • Functional polymers and hydrogels
  • Nano and microparticles (inter alia core-shell particles)
  • Ionic polymerization methods (carbanionic and oxyanionic)
  • Nano- and microstructured (bio) functional surfaces
  • Functional layers for medical and biotechnology

Material processing and material characterization

  • Formulation of polymer- and biobased functional (bio)inks for digital 3D printing processes
  • Construction of artificial tissue (bioprinting) for 3D tissue engineering for the construction of vascularized tissue
  • Tissue-specific bioreactor development

Dissertations

Current research projects

We adapt properties of material surfaces that come in contact with solid / liquid / gaseous media. Among other things, we use plasma technology in which surface changes via physical and chemical interactions are achieved by means of electrical discharges.

Main fields of research

  • Vapor deposition (Chemical Vapor Deposition, CVD)
  • Plasma coating and plasma process developments
  • Gas phase diagnostics and interface characterization
  • Physical-chemical modeling for wetting and wetting, for example for anti-ice surfaces and dry forming
